"This is about the Freshwater Turtle and the hunting and gatherers of the land. So once again, you have the rainforest at the top and you come down to the sand on the banks of the river, and you know its freshwater because freshwater turtles only live in fresh water and they have the little webbed feet with the claws because they dig holes in to the soil to lay their eggs because they’re reptilian. Now our people hunt the turtle because it’s a very good food source for our people.
So up the top you’ll see the women sitting around the camp fire with their coolamons and digging sticks once again, the life force of the rainforest flowing out of the mist and so forth, little hands saying: we belong to this land.
And the freshwater turtle; we hunt the freshwater turtle because the food source is so good. Now I’ve eaten the freshwater turtle and the thing is, it's gotta be bled, and the flesh – the closest to what I could say it tastes like is the nice white sea scallops, the meat is very opaque and it tastes like sea scallops to me – you don’t overcook it! You just cook it neatly and gently in the coals, take it out and then you can eat it. But it tastes like to me, sea scallops, so it’s very valuable."
