"This one here shows the Sand Goanna, once again, camouflaged in its environment. So the circles are the life force of the earth, the red colours show us that it’s the in-land parts of Australia – the drier areas. Once again, the eggs, the Sand Goanna as I said, lays its eggs under the ground because its cold-blooded, it’s a reptile so it’s the heat of the sun that germinates, so when I do the eggs, you see it has a dark background which represents its being under the ground not on top of the ground.

Here at the bottom on the original painting the dark patches represent the granite rocks and they rise about an inch off the canvas, I built them up with the sand in between – a perfect place for the sand goannas.

But all over Australia, no matter if its rain forest or the Savannah or the desert areas, our people understood their environment and lived within their environment. Once again, the footprints, following the maps of the land – the song lines going through the land to protect the earth. At the [top left], women sitting around the camp fire and the fire is going in the centre, the little coolamons or pitchis or wooris full of the bush tucker food and the digging stick women use to collect the food.

Camouflaged, is my grandson Jordan’s hand, now Jordan is saying he belongs to this land and then (below the Sand Goanna) that’s his little daughter, my great granddaughter’s. So his idea here is to teach his daughter the story of the Sand Goanna and how to hunt and where to find the eggs so it keeps her in tune with her culture and where she belongs and the story of the earth."
