"This painting is showing an ocean scene; I lived in Cairns for fifteen years and close to the Great Barrier Reef and flying over it all the time to the remote communities in the Torres Straits.

So what I’ve got at the very top, you see the yellows and oranges and so forth, well that’s the colours of the sand and the life force of the sand, you’ll see the sand where it runs out and goes in to the ocean and the little patterns where it goes down. And in that sand walking across the beach is the footprints our people walking along and the little hands, the tow little hands saying – we belong to this area or this place.

So while we’re on the beach we’d be looking for the turtle eggs, the sea turtles and you’ll notice in there, you’ve got four sea turtles, because sea turtles have flippers, not webbed feet like our freshwater turtle. And only the females come back to the sand, or to the land to lay their eggs roughly every three years and our people understood that structure of the turtles when they come to migrate to lay their eggs and we’d go and collect the eggs. We’d only collect so many and leave so many in the nest so they’d reproduce and not to destroy the environment.

In the water, you got the big blue circles and that’s the life-force of the water and the ocean. I used to fly over as I said, the Great Barrier Reef, and looking down, these are the colours I see when I look down in to the water, so I try and reproduce those colours in the water.

Then there at the bottom, you’ve got two big reef fish in the water just floating around, then on the left hand side, you got the colours of the coral, the Great Barrier Reef, then in the coral, you got the two little reef crabs trying to be camouflaged and in the coral area, you got four little jellyfish and the jellyfish are living in the reef area. It’s a food source for the crab and food source for the turtles, so everything relies on each other to look after the environment."
