"This painting here depicts the hunting of the Kangaroo and it’s in the drier area, you can tell by the colour of the soil of the Red Centre. You can see the circles representing the colours of the earth. Up the top left hand side you’ve got the big circle which is the life-force of the earth and then you have a smaller circle and once again, you have three women sitting around it with their coolamons and digging sticks sitting around a fire, so they’re preparing food.
Then you follow along and you see the footprints coming in – that’s our people moving around the land, we call the ‘Song Lines’. The Song Lines are maps of the earth so we moved around to protect the earth. Then you come back down, on the right hand side the life force of the earth and then you can see our people coming along.
So you’ve got the warriors carrying spears, boomerangs [and] woomeras. The warrior at the front is kneeling down and pointing because – what’s he doing? He’s tracking the kangaroo. The best time to hunt the kangaroo is in the morning or in the evening cause that’s when they come out to eat. When it’s hot, they usually stay in the shady places and they’re hard to find because all our animals in Australia are camouflaged. We may not think so but when you get out there in to their environment and you look for them, then you realise just how camouflaged they are. So you see on the left hand side, you have five kangaroos which are camouflaged with the earth – you gotta look for them!
So our people tracked those animals; so it’s showing the trackers coming through and hunting the kangaroo – hence Kangaroo Hunt."
